Does Your Bike Belong In The Kitchen?
Bikes require a whole pile of specific tools, and very few riders own them (or need to). Even if you had access to those tools, you might not know how to use them.*
*Okay, you probably know how to use a toothbrush.
But if you need to install a spindle bottom bracket, or true a wheel, or remove a fixed cog, you pretty much gotta have this stuff.
So it's a good thing there are places with all these tools and more, and eager teachers to show you what to do. No, not your local bike shop. Your local bike kitchen.

What
A bike kitchen is a volunteer run, non-profit space stocked with parts, tools, and knowledgeable humans. Bike kitchens focus on education and community development. They allow anyone with a bike and the desire to fix it, the use of tools and the space to learn. Unlike your local repair shop, at the kitchen, you've got to do the work yourself. Prepare to get educated, and dirty.
Where
There are hundreds of bike kitchens around the world, turning thousands of wrenches and repairing untold numbers of bikes. While not a comprehensive map, start here if you're looking for one near you.
The San Francisco Bike Kitchen is open Tuesday - Thursday and Saturday evenings. Visit them here.
Why
Because fixing a bicycle is empowering and totally useful. For those who just need to replace a brake cable, the tools are ready. For those in need of personal development and employment training, the community is at hand. If you take care of your bike, it will take care of you.

How
Just show up. Some kitchens have a one time use fee, others have membership programs, others will trade parts or service for volunteer time. Kitchen communities are collaborative and inclusive, no one willing to learn and work is turned away.

Magic
The true magic of these spaces is the communities that thrive within them, and because of them. The line between patron, casual volunteer, and committed organizer is often blurry and often changing. The peer-to-peer system is a great equalizer, and a great perpetuator, always creating new teachers and advocates.
