Rubber Side Up

June 9, 2014

In 1866 Brooks England started making leather strapping and saddles for horses. By 1880 they were offering bicycle saddles and collecting patents. By the 1930's they were producing over 60% of the 2.7 million saddles made in England. The vast majority of these were made from natural, tough leather. Leather is beautiful and durable, and it's not uncommon for a Brooks to last decades, but it has a considerable break-in period before it's comfortable.

Introducing the Cambium, Brooks' most dramatic innovation in 100 years. The Cambium retains the Brooks character of timeless beauty and durable craftsmanship while offering what Brooks' leather saddles can not: instant comfort. There's no break-in period, no need to re-tension the material, no upkeep of the leather. It's ready to ride.

Brooks teamed up with the venerable San Francisco Bay Area design house IDEO to create the Cambium. IDEO's concept took 7 years to source and perfect. The result is vulcanized rubber (which means it won't distort in any temperature) covered in organic weatherproof cotton.

The rubber top is designed to follow your movements while retaining form. Instant comfort and constant support. Perfect for city riders on bumpy streets.

Old world craftsmanship meets new world design. The Cambium is ready to ride. Saddle up.
