Year In Photos 2012

The Mayans were wrong, we're all still here, and another great year has drawn to a close.

We built hundreds of bikes, took thousands of pictures, received countless smiles and watched our community of riders grow. We launched a whole new bicycle, the Sutro, made a few more videos and 43,000 new friends on Instagram (thanks). Our humble staff, our biggest group ever at 11, are tired and excited for more.

Thanks for all your support in 2012, best wishes for 2013.

Ok. Not exactly a photo. But one of our favorite images of the year. Our friend Payam made this city-sized heart on his Mission Bicycle for his girlfriend on Valentines day.

We launched the Sutro, an internally geared bike uniquely designed for city riding. That's Jessie, above, with Sutro #1. Above him is the Sutro prototype with Sutro tower in the background. That one was shot by our good friend Luis Pena.

After a few years of running into each other we finally made the big move for more space. Our workshop is now all the way... across the street from our retail shop. Our mechanic James transports tires.

Our beautiful city continues to provide amazing places to ride and shoot.

We got in the Olympic spirit with our Velocity Deep V ring display. The image fell on interested eyes as it quickly spread all over the internet.

We launched an Instagram profile to share beautiful bicycle shots and the response was enormous. 43,000 followers and counting.

Our staffer David hand painted this Mission Bicycle for Dia de Los Muertos. This bike now lives with its happy new owner in Australia.

We were able to source immaculate and affordable chroming to produce the most decadent bicycles possible.

We led another Midnight Mystery Ride. Attendees were treated to a silent film with live musical accompaniment, popcorn, candy, and zero cops.

We stayed out late and made blinky light paintings. Happy 2013.

P.S. Our 2nd Annual subMission Photo Contest is underway. If you've got a great photo you can still enter on Instagram.

Long Exposure Blinky Light Painting

It gets dark now, early. Real early.

You're already armed with blinky lights, why not make something out of it? Grab a camera and a tripod and we'll show you how to capture long exposure light paintings.

1. Find the Right Spot

The darker the better. You can do this in the open air but using a wall for reference can make complicated drawings a snap.

2. Set Your Shutter Speed to Slow

Like real slow. Like anywhere from 10 - 30 seconds. The longer your shutter the more time you'll have to create your painting, but also the more light the camera will capture. Experiment to find the right balance. And don't forget, a tripod or stationary support is a must.

Got an iPhone instead of a DSLR? No worries, there's an app for that. Check out Slow Shutter, only $2 from the App Store.

3. Get to it

This is the fun part, but expect that it's going to take a few attempts. They more you experiment the better you'll get. Set your light to blinky mode to add some sparkle.

For our photo we chose a multi-step image to animate, but yours can be captured in a single exposure like this one we produced last year. If you want to make an animated GIF as well, this site works the magic for your, for free.

Once your fingers and toes are sufficiently cold, head inside to see what you've got. We'd also love to see your best shots. Please send them to info[at]missionbicycle.com.

Dear Mission: A Personal Account

Over the weekend we received a letter from a Mission bicycle rider in NYC. He wrote to tell us that despite unexpected personal hardship, Hurricane Sandy, and nor'easter Athena, he was okay. He went on to say, with his bike, he knew he was going to be okay. With his blessing, we're humbled to share this story of perseverance and pedaling with you.

Snow covered Mission bicycle

Dear Mission Bicycle,

Like many people, I fell in love with my bike the day I first laid eyes on her. From zipping up and down the West Side Highway to laps around Brooklyn parks, my single speed was a joy to ride.

Yet, I don't think I ever knew just how much she meant to me until adversity knocked on the door.

The last two weeks have been tough. My relationship ended and I moved out to a crappy sublet, shuttling duffel bags on my bike. I slept on floors with nothing but a toothbrush and my bike.

Then Sandy decided to come and pay us a visit out here on the East Coast. Through storm surges, hurricane debris, whipping winds, gas shortages, and thigh-high flooding, my bike got me to school and home. A week later, Athena decided to dump six inches of slushy dense wet snow on Long Island, as if we weren't battered enough as is.

When an oak tree fell on the commuter train and stranded me 30 miles from home in a freezing nor'easter, I got on my bike and started pedaling. While skinny tires are no bueno for snow riding, she got me home.

I am cold, hungry, tired and alone, and I don't know what else is in store for me. But as I lie in my sleeping bag, staring at my bike, I know I can handle anything the world throws at me.

Just me and my bike.

Thank you Mission Bicycle. Thank you for making amazing bikes, and for getting me home.

Sincerely,
B

MUST SEE VIDEO: You're going to love this (or hate it)

It's Tuesday, November 6th. The polls are open.

Get out (on your bike) and go vote.

Curious about this crazy light thing?

It was invented and designed by a San Francisco Bay Area company called Monkeylectric. The one featured above is totally custom, but we've got two easy versions to light your wheels and amaze those you pass by. Check them out here... right after you vote.

Our friend, talented filmmaker and all around handsome guy Luis Peña jumped on board to make this video. He directed, shot and edited the whole thing in two days. He's got lots of other beautiful projects here... that you can watch right after you vote.

Thanks.

Exclusive: Light Made Smarter

A Mission Bicycle exclusive, Blink/Steady is the most sophisticated and effortless bike light yet.

No buttons, no forgetting, no worries. Just light, made smarter.

How Does It Work?

The Short Version: get on your bike and ride. If it's dark, then the light ignites. Seriously, that's it.

The Full Story: Blink/Steady utilizes an internal accelerometer to sense movement and turns on as soon as you begin to ride. It also has a light sensor ensuring activation only in low light, so you won't waste power during the day. Once you get home or lock up, the light shuts off automatically after 30 seconds of inactivity.

The machined aluminum housing slides directly onto your seatpost. There's no bracket, clasp, or clip to adjust and more importantly, no way to steal the light without removing the entire seatpost.

Blink/Steady has, as you might have guessed, two simple but effective options: blink and steady. The innovative LED's are designed to distribute light 180 degrees around you in a wide arc, so that the car behind can see you just as well as the one a few lanes over.

Blink/Steady is powered by two AAA batteries for 100 hours of run time, and made entirely in the USA.

In stock now. Get yours here.
